My PDA's battery won't hold a charge
Hits:69
Some users operate their PDAs in such an inefficient way that it may seem like the battery barely holds a charge, but, in fact, the user is placing too many power demands on the unit. Turn off or reduce the level of backlighting and make sure the device is set to automatically shut down if it isn't used for a fixed number of minutes. Turn off wireless transmitters and remove expansion cards or other peripherals if you are not using them. Turn on key guards if they are available to prevent the unit from being accidentally turned on when you carry it in your pocket and consider investing in a stiff-sided case that will also keep accidental power-ons to a minimum.

If you charge the PDA overnight and it won't turn on or the battery indicator icon doesn't fill up and the device runs for only a few minutes when you turn it on, there's a good chance the battery is shot. We've seen some older iPAQ models where this is a real problem; if you've stored the device without flipping a switch, the battery drains completely over time and refuses to take a charge when you put the device back in its cradle. Contact the manufacturer and explain the situation to see if you can get a free replacement, but expect to shell out plenty of cash if your unit is out of its warranty period.

To get the maximum life out of your PDA's battery, only charge it to full capacity on the days you plan to use it. For instance, don't let it sit in its cradle charging for days on end. When you're storing the PDA for more than a few weeks, don't store it with a full charge or no charge. Charge the battery or run it down until it is between 20% and 50% full and then store the device. Also keep an eye on the battery gauge when you're using it to make sure you never completely drain the battery. Read the instruction manual to see if there are any special precautions to take regarding the battery before storing the unit for long periods.
